Hobson's Choice

Harold Brighouse's classic comic love story is the tale of a Salford cobbler with three unruly daughters that owes more than a little to King Lear and Cinderella. The homage is purely intentional.

Perhaps best known from its 1954 film version directed by David Lean, the play remains a complete delight, presenting a vivid picture of the realities of working class life but balancing it perfectly with uplifting humour.  It's directed by Nadia Fall, whose recent credits include The Doctor’s Dilemma at the National Theatre.

From the cobbles of Lancashire, bombastic boot-shop owner Henry Horatio Hobson takes umbrage at his daughter’s intention to marry long-suffering bootmaker Willie Mossop.

Through her determination, the couple weds, set up a rival establishment and orchestrate Hobson’s fall from grace. But it is Willie who triumphs in this unlikely love story, as newfound fortitude deals a resolution that is 'Hobson’s choice' - i.e. no choice at all.
